The Summer I Turned Pretty (TSITP) devotees were left fuming recently after Jeremiah Fisher's (portrayed by Gavin Casalegno) underwhelming proposal to girlfriend Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) following his confession of infidelity, as viewers have already sussed out the programme's ultimate conclusion, reports the Mirror.
Jeremiah initially popped the question without a ring in the Prime Video series, before subsequently presenting her with one that Taylor Jewel (Rain Spencer) later likened to a minuscule fragment of "tinfoil".
Despite the diminutive nature of the jewellery, Belly was utterly smitten and completely committed to marrying Jeremiah whilst overlooking his betrayal.
However, as the programme progresses, might the cracks be beginning to emerge in Belly and Jeremiah's relationship?
Reach Screen Time chatted exclusively with award-winning sex and relationship coach Gemma Nice regarding Jeremiah's warning signs, which could signal catastrophe for his romance with Belly.
Nice revealed: "Jeremiah seems to constantly be in competition mode with his brother, even when it's not reciprocated, in order to gain validation from his father, who clearly favours Conrad.
"His relationship with Belly feels partly like an extension of that competition, especially in [a] recent episode where he tells Laurel (her mother), "Belly chose me," which many felt should have been finished as, "Belly chose me, not my brother," showing he loves the idea of winning."
The relationship guru highlighted: "Another red flag is Jeremiah's questionable commitment. After an argument with Belly about going on holiday without telling her, he made a passive breakup comment and, within days, slept with another girl twice. If he were truly devoted, he wouldn't have left that argument unresolved or sought comfort elsewhere."
Despite the modest size of Jeremiah's engagement ring, Nice pointed out that it wasn't the ring's size at issue but rather his overall behaviour and lack of consideration, such as ordering the priciest item on the menu when Laurel offered to pay, purchasing the ring with his father's credit card without consent, and opting for a gold ring despite Belly's preference for silver.
On the topic of Belly's willingness to dismiss Jeremiah's unfaithfulness, she observed: "Belly may have been trying to maintain a positive outcome with the engagement because she truly believes that Jeremiah can change and has hope that the issues they face from the outside world will disappear once they are married. Belly may also believe that she would be on her own if she did not say yes to Jeremiah.
"She's likely willing to overlook all of his red flags simply because she loves Jeremiah and wants to make it work, without taking into consideration anyone else's feelings, as Belly sees it as just the two of them within the relationship."
Adding: "Belly may also lack healthy boundaries and is therefore willing to say yes to Jeremiah. She could be hoping that Jeremiah will change once she has agreed to the engagement and believes she has the power to change him."
Viewers are left in suspense as to whether Belly and Jeremiah will actually tie the knot, but it's evident that if they do, their union would commence on shaky ground, with both parties requiring significant self-improvement.
