Outlander: Blood of My Blood official trailer

Outlander: Blood of My Blood has finally arrived, much to the delight of fans, with the third episode due next week.

The series acts as a prequel to the original Starz historical drama based on Diana Gabaldon's novels, reports the Daily Record.

Unlike Outlander, Blood of My Blood isn't derived from any specific books, but it does draw inspiration from Gabaldon's works.

The first two episodes fully immersed viewers into the world of Blood of My Blood, and true to the creators' word, there were numerous nods to Outlander.

Here are the 11 most significant Outlander Easter eggs in Blood of My Blood.

1. Julia's university aspirations

Julia Moriston (portrayed by Hermione Corfield) shared her academic dreams with a colleague during World War I, alluding to the real-life Edinburgh Seven, the first group of female undergraduates admitted to a British university.

They studied medicine in 1869, but a court later ruled they shouldn't have been admitted and couldn't graduate.

Despite this, the Edinburgh Seven paved the way for women's higher education and led to legislation permitting women to practice medicine in 1876.

This reference seems to be a nod to Julia's daughter Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe), who went on to study medicine at university and become a doctor.

2. Beside the seaside

Outlander enthusiasts have found themselves captivated by this early 20th century dancehall melody since it made its comeback in season seven, featuring during a montage where Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia exchange correspondence.

I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside was also the tune Claire crooned to her stillborn baby after her mother Julia had sung it to her during childhood featured in season two.

This melody is set to serve as a crucial connection between Outlander and Blood of My Blood, whilst also providing a vital hint regarding Faith Fraser's survival.

3. Henry's casual remark about a Highlander

Whilst visiting Inverness, Henry made a jest about her eloping with a "handsome Highlander", which strongly echoes Outlander's romantic triangle involving Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), Claire and Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies).

Fortunately for Henry, this scenario seems improbable as Julia will be attempting to return to her spouse, given she's expecting their child.

4. Brian endures Julia's punishment

Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) bore Julia's flogging after she attempted to escape from Castle Leathers.

This poignant scene not only mirrors Jamie accepting punishment on behalf of Laoghaire MacKenzie (Nell Hudson), but also recalls his own brutal beatings inflicted by the villainous Captain Black Jack Randall (also Menzies), which left him permanently scarred.

5. Ellen's prowess at chess

In a touching sequence of flashbacks, viewers saw Ellen MacKenzie (portrayed by Harriet Slater) engaging in chess games with her father Red Jacob (played by Peter Mullan) prior to his demise.

These scenes not only highlighted his partiality towards her but also demonstrated how he imparted crucial strategic acumen for her to outmanoeuvre adversaries.

It appears Jamie inherited his chess prowess from his mother, showcasing his talent both in France and during his confinement at Ardsmuir, where he played against governor Lord John Grey (acted by David Berry).

6. Henry alludes to the New World

Upon traversing through the stones into the 18th century, Henry finds himself in a tavern ,casually mentioning North and South Carolina. This brief line is a subtle homage to Fraser's Ridge in North Carolina in the New World, reminiscent of Claire's frequent allusions to the future and forthcoming events.

7. Claire becomes a topic of conversation

Henry and Julia engage in a heartfelt discussion about their cherished daughter Claire, expressing concern over how she might adjust to being an older sister. The audience is also treated to a glimpse of a newborn Claire following Julia's delivery.

8. Henry and Julia's Inverness adventure and their passage through the stones

Julia and Henry's romantic trip to Inverness mirrors the inaugural episode of Outlander, where Claire and Frank embark on a second honeymoon to the Scottish Highlands post-WWII. The imagery of the couple driving together evokes memories of Frank and Claire's journey, with Henry's utterance of "Mrs Beauchamp" resonating with the voice of his future son-in-law.

Of course, there was the moment when they both traversed through the stones, mirroring Claire's initial time-travel journey.

9. Murtagh's boar tusk bracelets

Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Rory Alexander) was depicted crafting a pair of boar tusk bracelets for Ellen after slaying a wild boar in an attempt to win her over. As Outlander aficionados will recall, these bracelets were mentioned earlier when it was disclosed that he gifted them to Ellen as a wedding present when she wed Brian.

Despite his attraction to Ellen, Murtagh also had a flirtatious interaction with her younger sister Jocasta Cameron (Sadhbh Malin), culminating in them sleeping together years later in Outlander.

10. Angus and Rupert make an appearance

In a delightful homage to Outlander, viewers got a glimpse of a young Rupert (Louis O'Rourke) and Angus (Marlow Walters) peeping through a keyhole. The scene was made even more touching as the two young actors portraying the roles are the sons of former Rupert star Grant O'Rourke and previous Angus actor Stephen Walters.

In the first season of Outlander, Jamie was inseparable from Rupert and Angus, characters who remain dear to the fanbase.

11. Julia's medical knowledge and engineering skills

Lastly, Julia demonstrated her medical expertise and engineering prowess, suggesting raspberry leaves for pain relief during childbirth and repairing her husband Henry's wristwatch.

Both of these references are to her doctor daughter Claire and her engineer granddaughter Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton).
