A passenger was reportedly “sliced open” after a malfunction on a cruise ship waterslide. The waterslide shattered when the person was sliding down, leaving a huge gap exposed.
The incident took place on board the world’s biggest cruise ship. A section of slide in the Icon of the Seas' waterpark burst just as a man was shooting down it, eyewitnesses said. One person who saw it happen said that the person’s “leg and back were cut open pretty bad”.
The malfunction happened on Thursday and footage which has circulated online shows the water falling out of the slide through the gap. While they did not fall through it, they did come away with injuries.
Passengers reportedly began to shout to get cruise ship staff to “stop the slide!”
Images taken onboard the ship show the jagged hole which was left in the slide’s panels, but the man is reportedly in stable condition, reports The Sun.
It is believed the man was riding on the Frightening Bolt slide.
The slide has the world’s highest drop at sea with a huge 46 feet in height.
The 1,200-foot-long Icon of the Seas and its sister ship, Star of the Seas, are the world’s biggest cruise ships. Each can accommodate 7,600 passengers.
Icon of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean, said: “Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide.
“The guest is being treated for his injuries. The water slide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation.”
This huge ship was only launched last year.
