Many people buy a watch to mark moments in their life, whether it's a milestone birthday, an anniversary, or a personal achievement. That is what entrepreneur Guy Blaskey, founder of Detrash, set out to do after selling his company. Having built the healthy dog food brand Pooch & Mutt to £30m and successfully taken on industry giants like Mars and Nestle, he began searching for a watch to commemorate the achievement.
Although always interested in watches, Guy hadn't paid close attention to the watch industry - but what he discovered surprised him. In his experience with consumer goods sold online and in supermarkets, the real momentum had shifted toward ethical brands doing things better.
These ideas lead Guy to create Detrash, a brand which showcases what can be made with materials derived from rubbish. In their current range there are seven watches on offer, and each of them is limited to just 100 watches per design.
Included in this is the Cali - Melting Ice Cap Blue for £375 which is a bold, blue-dialed watch that was made sustainable, is a 41mm dive watch made with 80% recycled steel, an ocean-plastic strap, automatic movement and is 200m water resistant. There is also the Blue Steel watch for £375, Poision Ivy for £375 which is a green shade and lastly is Player One for £375 which is inspired by the gaming days and has different emojis and characters throughout the design.
If this isn't the watch for everyone, shoppers could instead try the Casio Collection Men Black Plastic Strap Watch for £14.95 from House of Watches which has resin band and case is durable and has flexible properties. Another is the Garmin Instinct 2 Smart Watch - Graphite for £219 from Argos which has 32MB memory, two hour charge and can track workouts and runs.
The reviews for the Detrash watches, however, are often highly rated, as one person said about the Player One watch: "Very pleased, love it. No one would ever know your watch is made from trash unless you told them. Keep making great watches from trash."
Another said: "I purchased a Player One and I couldn't be happier with it. There is a nice weight to it (which I didn't expect with it being made of recycled material), the colours really pop and it seems to be really well made. I'm glad I took the plunge!"
"Thanks so much for the Player One. I love it and my daughter has already tried to steal it off me! I am proud to be your first Thailand customer. The Rolex will have to stay in the draw for now! Also Thanks Dan for getting it out so quickly to me, much appreciated. Can highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun watch thats different!" said another.
Not every watch brand will be suited to everyone and some others disagreed. One said: "I like the watch, it is very cool and stylish, my only comment relates to the strap, I feel this drags down the premium feel of the watch face and its looks. My strap is already slightly fraying at the every end, the yellow strips of cotton look like elastic bands a little. Other than that I am really pleased."
Another said: "I was sceptical of the quality of the watch when I first saw it thinking that for the price and quality it was too good to be true, but, upon receiving the watch my expectations were absolutely blown away."
The watches are available from Detrash.
