Season two of Netflix’s Wednesday has now arrived with fans getting four ghoulish new episodes to sink their teeth into.
The show made its long-awaited comeback after debuting back in 2022.
Many fans have been left deeply perplexed after the Jenna Ortega series only returned with four episodes.
Here is the scoop on Wednesday season two and the reason there are only four episodes.
There are only four episodes of Wednesday on Netflix at the moment - more will be arriving next month.
Wednesday season two’s release has been staggered into two stages.
Like its predecessor, there is a total of eight episodes in Wednesday season two but they are being released in two halves. So fans can breathe easy knowing more episodes are on the way.
Netflix made the decision to split season two of Wednesday in half, with the first four episodes dropped in one go on Wednesday, August 6.
The second half, comprised of episodes five to eight, drop on Wednesday, September 3.
Addressing the release schedule, Wednesday’s co-creator Alfred Gough told Forbes that the decision was “something that came from Netflix.”
However, it meant both Gough and fellow co-creator Miles Millar could storyboard the plot differently and leave fans on a huge cliffhanger.
At the same time, Gough said this new format allowed them to “change up the storytelling mystery” and for the first half of the season to “feel complete” in itself rather than making audiences wait until the final eighth episode.
The release schedule is a contrast to the first outing when Netflix released season one of Wednesday in one go.
Other shows to see their seasons broken up include Bridgerton season three and Cobra Kai season six, the latter of which was split into three parts.
The forthcoming fifth and final season of Stranger Things will also be stretched out into three parts over a couple of months.
Netflix has been increasingly splitting up the release of its big hitters to maintain interest and crucially subscribers to its platform.
The decision comes amid an increasingly crowded streaming market, with a whole range of video-on-demand platforms jostling for space and subscribers.
When Netflix first launched with its first-ever Original series House of Cards, the platform would release whole shows as a boxset for fans to binge.
Seeing the success of Netflix, others including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Disney+, and many others subsequently launched.
But the big difference is, many of these platforms, particularly Apple TV+, drops episodes on a weekly basis to maintain its subscription base.
Netflix is likely to continue with this trend of dropping shows in parts going forward as they hold onto their share of the streaming market.
Wednesday season 2, part 1 is streaming now on Netflix and part 2 will be released on September 3
