Tesco has just unveiled a new and unusual addition to its meal deal range, leaving shoppers divided: the Birthday Cake Sandwich.

Landing on shelves today, the limited-edition treat promises the flavours of a classic Victoria Sponge, complete with birthday cake-style sprinkles inside. Tesco confirmed to The Sun that the quirky sandwich will be available for just four weeks in 1,000 stores nationwide.

Priced at £3 on its own, the sandwich can also be picked up as part of Tesco’s meal deal, costing £4 for non-Clubcard holders or £3.60 for those with a Clubcard.

Since its launch, the Birthday Cake Sandwich has already gone viral on social media. Some shoppers have praised the sweet twist, with one saying: "I work for Tesco and had it for lunch it’s b***** amazing." Another added: "It's sooo good." Others said they couldn't wait to try it and would be rushing to Tesco.

But not everyone is convinced. One unimpressed shopper wrote: "Absolutely No...sandwich is a sandwich...Cake is cake no need to mix. Just wrong." Others described it as "disgusting" and simply said "aww hell nah".

Tesco’s latest creation comes hot on the heels of M&S’s Strawberries & Creme sandwich, which took inspiration from Japanese sandos and became a talking point during Wimbledon. The luxury £2.80 sandwich features strawberries and whipped cream cheese between slices of sweet bread.

While M&S has a long history of sandwich innovation, Tesco has been catching up with unique offerings in recent years. Last year, it launched a limited-edition ham, egg and chips sandwich inspired by classic greasy spoon cafés, which proved popular with customers seeking something different.

Whether Tesco’s birthday cake-inspired creation will become a cult classic remains to be seen – but it’s certainly got people talking.
