Outlander star Sam Heughan has opened up about wrapping the final scene on the hit Starz drama, shortly after revealing a thrilling new project and hinting at "loss" in the concluding episodes, reports the Daily Record.
During a recent chat, the 45 year old Scottish actor was quizzed about his last day of filming Outlander, with the star revealing details about the final sequence he recorded alongside co-star and fellow executive producer Caitríona Balfe.
Heughan revealed: "There were a lot of goodbyes over a long period of time, but the very last day, myself and my co-star [Balfe] had a scene that was very long and we had to shoot this.
"And they had invited all the crew from the building to come and watch the last take. There were about several hundred people watching, which also adds pressure.
"It was very emotional. Caitríona, I think, was fair to say... I was watching her on her close up and her lip was quivering the whole time. She couldn't control it and I think I shut down a bit."
"I think I was like, 'I have to get through this' and then obviously at the end it all came out but wonderful.
"What an amazing journey to go on, and I am really very thankful," he added on The Travel Diaries with Holly Rubenstein podcast.
Nevertheless, Heughan remained tight-lipped about specifics from the sequence.
Considering television programmes are seldom filmed in chronological order, it might not have been the concluding scene of Outlander. Despite this, there's a buzz of speculation that the final scene of Outlander will feature a poignant moment between Jamie's ghost and Claire in 1940s Inverness before she crosses through the stones.
Diana Gabaldon, the author of Outlander, has previously stated that she plans to conclude her novel series with this very scene, assuring fans that it will be a tear-jerker.
However, the television adaptation has significantly deviated from Gabaldon's books, as confirmed in season seven, indicating that the show will follow a different trajectory than the original material.
Therefore, those familiar with the novels may encounter numerous unexpected twists and turns in the series that were not present in the books.
Heughan's comments come after Starz announced at San Diego Comic-Con that the eighth and final season of Outlander would be gracing our screens in early 2026, accompanied by a sneak peek teaser.
Although there is a bit of a wait, Outlander enthusiasts are in for a treat with the prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiering this week with a double-bill special.
The series delves into the love stories of Jamie and Claire's parents.
Unlike its predecessor, Blood of My Blood merely uses the Outlander novels as a springboard and explores new territory without any source material for guidance.
Starz has already renewed Blood of My Blood ahead of the premiere of the first season, demonstrating the network's faith and commitment to the series.
This also means that once Outlander concludes, fans will still have more content from the same universe to delve into.
Outlander season 8 will premiere on Starz and MGM+ via Prime Video in early 2026
Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres on Starz on August 8 and on Prime Video via MGM+ on August 9
