While the sunny seaside of Cornwall, Devon, and Dorset may be the choice for many holidaygoers looking for a staycation, one overlooked spot far away from the south coast could be the best option, being ranked better than them all. For the fourth year running, the quaint Northumberland village of Bamburgh has taken the crown as the "best" seaside destination in the UK, and despite its accolades, it isn't quite as overrun with tourists as many of your south coast spots.

Thousands of Which? members were surveyed to find their favourite place. They had to rank destinations on their beach, seafront, scenery, tourist attractions, and peace and quiet to give them an overall score. Bamburgh scooped some top reviews, scoring five out of five in all five of the categories and an impressive 86% overall, pipping more than 120 other towns to take the top spot.

Nestled in its patch of the Northumbrian countryside, Bamburgh is only an hour away from Newcastle but is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the north-eastern city.

Unlike many other British hot spots that are trying to limit tourism, Bamburgh is instead welcoming them with a smile and some northern charm. Previously speaking to The Express, Karen Larkins, visitor services manager at Barmburgh Castle, said locals are “always happy to talk and help people”.

She added: “We’re very much a tourist place and welcome tourists with open arms. Anyone who doesn’t want visitors should send them to Bamburgh.

"The pace of life here is relaxing - going into a city like Newcastle is OK, but life here is a lot calmer. I've lived here all my life, and people come here on holiday, so I feel very lucky to come here. The people generally do care. We look after the community and tourists."

With a population of just 400 people, the village makes its living from the tourists visiting, and with plenty to keep you busy for such a small place, it's no wonder visitors are flocking back.

The village is best known for its castle, which sits 150 feet above the stunning coastline. Built in the 11th century, it is dubbed "England's finest coastal fortress" and was built in the 11th century."

Although the North Sea can be famously nippy, lying down on the beach on a hot summer's day will be perfect for cooling off. 

One happy visitor leaving a five-star review on Tripadvisor said: "Bamburgh Beach is breathtaking, it’s got wide open sands, dunes, and the stunning Bamburgh Castle right on the edge. Perfect for long walks, especially during golden hour."

While another added: " Stunning bit of coastline here at Bamburgh beach, with beautiful soft white sand and grassy dunes."
