The season three premiere of The Summer I Turned Pretty (TSITP) has sparked outrage among viewers, reports the Mirror US.

The eagerly awaited YA drama series, based on Jenny Han's popular trilogy, debuted yesterday (July 16) on Prime Video, treating audiences to a double bill of episodes.

However, fans were left fuming at lead character Belly Conklin (portrayed by Lola Tung) and her boyfriend Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) after he was unfaithful to her twice following an argument.

Belly was devastated by his betrayal, leaving their relationship hanging in the balance.

Simultaneously, Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney) was involved in a car accident and was recuperating in hospital while Belly's romance with his brother was falling apart.

In true TSITP fashion, Jeremiah made a lacklustre marriage proposal without a ring, which Belly accepted.

The plot twist prompted a wave of criticism on social media, with one viewer venting on X (previously Twitter): "jeremiah cheats on belly TWICE. then PROPOSES with NO RING. while her brother is in a HOSPITAL BED. after a CAR CRASH and BENSON BOONE is playing. and I'M SUPPOSED TO SHIP? ! #TheSummerITurnedPretty [sic]."

Another added: "conrad still in love with belly after 4 years vs jeremiah cheating on her after 4 minutes of being broken up #TheSummerITurnedPretty [sic]."

A third observed: "When Conrad "left you" because he was sick and his mother had just died, he wasn't feeling well. When the dyed-blonde cheats on you TWICE, you forgive him and decide to marry him. Belly, you're a case study. #TheSummerITurnedPretty."

Another remarked: "imagine agreeing to marry a guy two days after finding out he cheated on you #tsitp #TheSummerITurnedPretty [sic].

"your brother had a concussion and a broken rib so you and your cheater boyfriend have to get married...? #TheSummerITurnedPretty [sic]," someone else chimed in.

Viewers will need to wait until next week to discover how events develop, with this series promising to be the lengthiest and most explosive yet.

Co-showrunner and creator Han has already teased there will be heartache and excitement this year to keep audiences captivated until the very finale.

Discussing the new series, stars Briney and Casalegno reflected on how they'd both evolved Conrad and Jeremiah's character journeys as they approached the final chapter.

"It's been cool to get put these characters through so much. I feel like this season is kind of the pay-off of all the work that's gone into building up this story, and these characters, and their growth or lack of growth," Briney explained. Adding: "And this season is the really fun, juicy product of that."

Casalegno agreed and said: "Yeah, you get to see the books and what we've been filming over the years, it comes to a head this season.

"You're really sucked in, you're drawn in, you're already sold.

"So getting to see season three and I think we're way more comfortable with each other, with the characters, with the crew, with the sets, it just made it a joy to film."
