Shocking figures show that immigration will cause the UK’s population to rise faster than any large EU country. The United Nations predicts that the UK’s population will grow faster than every EU country except Luxembourg, rising to 74.3million by the end of the century.

It follows a study drafted by Conservative peer Robin Hodgson and 'Blue Labour' grandee Maurice Glasman, which shows that the country has seen the number of people living in it balloon by 9.2 million this century. The report labels the increase as “the most rapid increase in our nation's history” and comes as the government continues to try and halt record numbers of small boat crossings. Lord Hodgson said: “If we don't start putting plans in place now, the problems we face later will be far harder to solve.”

This year, more than 20,000 people have made the perilous journey across the English Channel, with a total of 44,000 arriving since Labour’s election victory last year.

The influx has placed significant strain on the public purse, with hundreds of millions of pounds being spent on asylum hotels and has seen already flailing public services pushed to breaking point.

It has also led to the number of foreign nationals claiming Universal Credit increasing significantly in the last three years rising from 906,018 in June 2022 to 1.26million last month according to official figures.

Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: “These are staggering figures and are clear proof that the Labour Government has lost control of our welfare system.

“We’ve set out a clear, common-sense position. Universal Credit should be reserved for UK citizens only. This is about fairness, responsibility and protecting support for those who’ve contributed to this country.”

According to UN figures, cumulative net migration to the UK will amount to 14.3million by 2100, double the projection for France around a quarter less than expected in Germany.

Lord Glasman has now called on governments to address the issue in the coming years as a matter of priority.

He said: “Issues of demography and immigration have disfigured our public debates for too long.

“The general public is clearly looking for ways to address these challenges.”

Last week, the UK and France announced the trial of a scheme that will see the countries operate a “one-in, one-out” policy which will result in around 800 migrants being returned to France by the end of the year.

In return, an equal number of migrants will then be able to come to the UK from France through a new legal route.

The deal between the two countries is designed to break the business model of criminal gangs who profit from enabling the perilous journey over the English Channel.
