When Brits go abroad, it's normal for them to visit the supermarket. After all, lots of people do their own cooking when they travel, as self-catering is a popular option for tourists.

One British holidaymaker was left gobsmacked after a trip to Lidl in Spain saw her forking out around £96.00, equivalent to €114.00, for her groceries. Amanda Griffiths, known as The Griffs on TikTok, shared her shopping experience in a recent video post, after she opted to do her grocery shopping at Lidl and confessed that the prices have "definitely gone up."

In the video, she expressed hope that the food would last them a good while, with only occasional trips needed for essentials like bread and milk. She then showcased her haul, and it isn't the first time Spanish supermarket prices have got people talking.

Her shopping included a variety of items such as a watermelon, a large pack of toilet roll, beers, crisps, soft drinks, Cava and cleaning products. Essential staples like fruit, vegetables, meat and snacks were also part of her purchase.

In her video caption, Amanda acknowledged that inflation is "definitely present" in Spain, highlighting that the cost of fruit and vegetables has "definitely gone up." She stressed the importance of not wasting food due to these rising costs.

The video has now garnered hundreds of views and sparked a cascade of comments. Enthusiastic viewers shared their own takes and recounted personal experiences.

One viewer optimistically noted the value of the purchase, stating: "I do think it was worth it - the fruit looks lovely." Another chimed in with a comparative perspective: "That's cheaper than here I'm sure. Great haul lovely lady."

In her confession, Amanda acknowledges that, while it may be more cost-effective compared to the UK, Spanish prices have also "definitely gone up." Delving into differing opinions, one individual remarked on the fair pricing: "Everything seems fairly priced in all fairness. Lovely fruit."

Another commentator focused on the affordability of beverages, exclaiming: "The wine is so cheap. Wow."

Echoing concerns over inflating costs, a separate voice added: "Honestly, they (the prices) do keep going up."

Amid discussions on soaring expenses in Spanish tourist hotspots, Euro Weekly states: "The prices for drinks and snacks have surged by 50% in tourist zones. Across Spain, sun-seeking tourists on tight budgets, locals struggling with rising costs and familiar anxieties have resurfaced once again.

"Has the food suddenly become unaffordable? According to the latest data, the Spanish overall food inflation sits around 2.2%, which is roughly in line with the wider Eurozone.

"There is inflation in Spain, and prices are higher than they were in 2024. However, the idea is that Spain might be experiencing a food price crisis, but the data suggests otherwise."

Despite undeniable inflation and elevated costs since 2024, fears of an escalating food price crisis in Spain are not corroborated by current statistical evidence.

Reports indicate that Spain's food, alcohol and tobacco prices rose by 2.2% in April, as per the EU's official harmonised index. Currently, the Eurozone's food and drink inflation is approximately 2.2%.
