The BBC will be releasing an unmissable movie today (July 15) that has remained a classic to this day.

The Hollywood film received a slew of Oscar nominations after coming out in 1992, with lead star Al Pacino finally bagging an Academy Award for his performance, following on from his iconic roles in The Godfather and Scarface.

Many people have praised the film, as one fan titled their review on IMDb: “One of Pacino's best!”

They went on to explain: “Thank God! Pacino FINALLY received the Oscar statue he so rightfully deserved in all the years he was in the acting business.

“It's nice to know the Academy finally came to their senses, and awarded him a Best Actor Oscar for this landmark role.”

A second gave a 10/10 review and wrote: “Why is Pacino such a beast acting? I'll tell you why. His passion. Passion that overwhelms all surrounding him. His voice starts roaring and he forgets that he is Al Pacino. He suddenly becomes his character, he stops seeing around him and he is now a prisoner in his role.

“The movie is about Pacino. His acting is grand, superb, majestic, heart-wrenching, deep, emotional, so forth. His portrayal of a blind man dangling in the rope of his life, is not only credible but immensely touching. We see directly, through his crystalline performance all of the pain that griefs on his character. Any other actor would have given a corny, over the top performance. Pacino is the Ace.”

A third reviewer described the film as “one of the most beautiful movies ever” and said: “I think this incredible movie leaves a legacy of life, it makes us appreciate life an also understand that a life can be lived in a minute just like Al Pacino says in one of this movie's most beautiful scenes, it also talks about values, integrity, and moral principles, by sides of this movie's wonderful script it's incredible cast makes it one of the most outstanding movies I have ever seen.”

Another person hailed the flick as a “masterpiece” and commented: “This could be a perfect film for beginners studying art (acting, production, etc.).” They added: “The acting, the emotions-it was so heart-touching. Al Pacino delivered the role of a lifetime.”

Scent of a Woman came out in 1992 and followed Pacino’s visually impaired army veteran Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade and his unlikely friendship with Charlie Simms (Chris O’Donnell).

Student Charlie finds his world completely changed after he’s hired as a caregiver over the Thanksgiving weekend for the alcoholic, cynical and depressed ex-soldier.

The pair take a trip to New York City, where Frank tells Charlie he wishes to end his life, with the young student trying to convince him he has so much to live for and face the challenges of life.

Charlie also reveals his own problems at school and faces expulsion for refusing to reveal who pulled a prank on the headteacher’s car after he becomes an unwitting eyewitness.

Over the course of time, Charlie and Frank both help each other through their challenges in the life-affirming movie.

Scent of a Woman is adapted from the 1969 Italian novel Il buio e il miele (The Darkness and the Honey) by Giovanni Arpino.

Scent of a Woman will be available on the BBC iPlayer from 10.40pm today
