Netflix will be dropping a political thriller this summer that will have audiences on the edge of their seats.
Hostage promises to be a heart-stopping watch to rival the likes of BBC’s Bodyguard, with many already comparing the drama to the Keeley Hawes and Richard Madden series.
The highly-anticipated series is filled with plenty of twists and turns, joining the ranks of Netflix’s other political thrillers including The Diplomat, Treason, Anatomy of a Scandal, House of Cards, The Night Agent and The Recruit, among others. Here’s the lowdown on your next binge-watch.
Hostage will be released in its entirety on Netflix on August 21. There are five episodes in the limited series which can be all binged in one sitting.
Who is in the cast of Hostage on Netflix?
Hostage features a cast of A-listers, led by Suranne Jones who stars as British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton.
Jones, who also serves as an executive producer on Hostage, is best known to audiences thanks to her roles in period drama Gentleman Jack, submarine thriller Vigil, Doctor Foster, police drama Scott & Bailey, among others.
Joining her is French-American acting legend Julie Delpy as France’s premier Vivienne Toussaint, with the actress best known for her roles in Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy with Ethan Hawke, Three Colors: White, 2 Days in Paris and TV series On the Verge.
Ashley Thomas portrays Abigail’s husband Dr Alex Anderson, with the actor and rapper counting credits in HBO’s The Night Of, ITV’s The Ipcress File, 24: Legacy, horror anthology series Them, Top Boy, and Great Expectations.
Rising star Corey Mylchreest takes on the role of Matheo Lewis, with the actor best known for his breakout role as a Young King George in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and Netflix film My Oxford Year.
Lucian Msamati stars as Kofi Adamako, a member of Abigail’s government. The actor, writer and producer is known for his work across stage and screen, with notable turns in Sky’s Gangs of London, Game of Thrones, The Good Liar, Conclave, and See How They Run.
Other cast members include fellow Game of Thrones alumni James Cosmo as Max Dalton, Blue Lights’ Martin McCann as John Shagan, and Anatomy of a Fall’s Jehnny Beth as Adrienne Pelletier.
Further cast includes Isobel Akuwudike as Sylvie Anderson, Hiftu Quasem as Ayesha, Sophie Robertson as Saskia Morgan, Pip Carter as Dan Ogilvy, Josh Barrow as Tristan, Ami Okumura as Jones Zadie, Paul Thornley as Michael Hall, Sara Powell as Kathy Macintyre, Fode Simbo as Simon Kingsley, and Vincent Perez as Elias Vernier.
Hostage follows fictional British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton, who is blackmailed after her husband Dr Alex Anderson is kidnapped.
The visiting French Prime Minister Vivienne Toussaint also finds herself blackmailed as both political leaders have to make tough decisions.
Abigail and Vivienne will find themselves at odds with each other as their political careers and lives hang in the balance. Can the two politicians work together and uncover the sinister plot that threatens to destroy them both?
Hostage has been written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter and playwright Matt Charman, who was also behind Netflix’s Treason and Bridge of Spies with Mark Rylance.
