One 90s heartthrob who partied with the likes of Spice Girls, Boyzone and Steps ended up “homeless” and “in a skip smoking crack” after a rapid downfall. Kavana – full name Anthony Kavanagh – launched his pop career after being signed to a record label, and even supported Boyzone on the Smash Hits tour.

But behind the scenes, the star was struggling with addiction. On a cocktail of cocaine and booze, he tried to forge connections with everyone from the Gallagher brothers to Kate Moss, but as his hits dried up so did his opportunities to party with “Cool Britannia”.

Despite a string of hits including Will You Wait For Me and Funky Love, Kavana ended up “going under the radar” in Los Angeles, moving away from Manchester. He became hooked on crystal meth and was so desperate for a hit of alcohol while in a teetotal household that he downed a bottle of Joop aftershave.

He admitted in his new memoir Pop Scars : “I laugh at my reflection, what a joke — except the punchline is my life. The taste is beyond description, like someone’s melted a plastic Christmas tree with battery acid and marzipan.”

Kavana ended up moving back to England with the hopes of making a comeback in the world of pop, appearing on ITV talent show Grease is the Word and daytime programme Loose Women, from which he was “banned for life” after showing up drunk on-set.

He had a brief stint in pantomime and appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2015. Forced to confront his demons in rehab, Kavana admitted that his final binge “culminated in me smoking crack in a skip with a homeless lady who I bonded with then trusted with my Monzo card to go buy more drugs and who never returned.”

The star moved in with his mother, who was battling dementia in a sheltered housing complex, and thankfully got sober. He eventually moved out and has now penned a new autobiography – thankfully after turning his life around.
