Beach Holidays

A small seaside town in Greece has been praised as a “wonderful place” that’s ideal for those “on a budget” - and it’s where many locals spend their summers. Greece is a popular choice of holiday destination thanks to its year-round mediterranean climate, rich history, scenic landscapes, delicious food and much more.

As the cost of living crisis remains ongoing with prices continuing to rise, holidays seem like a luxurious pipedream for many, and securing a getaway on a budget is more important than ever. Many people on the quest for a much-needed break abroad turn to social media looking for tips and tricks from locals, travel aficionados and those in a similar position to themselves.

On Facebook, one woman shared her insight regarding the Greek town Kiato, a town located in the northern part of Corinthia in the Peloponnese. It’s in the municipality of Sikyona and, according to her, is where the locals holiday.

She shared a string of images and penned: “I thought I would suggest a wonderful place I’ve grown up visiting if you want to see Greece On a Budget.”

She continued: “Athenians vacation here during the summer. It’s filled with wonderful restaurants and beach bars in the summer months.

“Note: the beach bars don't charge for you to use their sun beds. Simply buying a coffee will suffice.”

Explaining how to get there, she said: “No car rental needed. Hop on the train from Athens airport to Kiato. There's one train change and the journey takes one hour and 30 minutes.

Kiato doesn’t have many hotels but there are very reasonable Airbnbs available, all walking distance from the beach and town centre.

“There is great public transport to cities like Corinth to see the canal or Loutraki for day trips. Also, this region is extremely historic so if you do rent a car, the world is your oyster in terms of sightseeing, visiting nearby beaches, towns, or mountains.”

In the comments section, people shared their thoughts - but some were unimpressed the woman had revealed such a well kept “secret”.

One person said: “Kiato was the best kept secret, until now…” while another agreed with this line of thinking and said: “Posts like this are what ruins ‘secret spots’ and ‘hidden gems’.”

And another declared: “Oh, noooooo! You’ve let our secret spot out! It’s nice that it’s not overrun by tourism.”

But others were grateful to see Kiato being recommended. One person commented: “Thanks for this post. My family is from here and I’ve swum in many waters but none match Corinthian waters! It’s truly a hidden gem!”

Another agreed and shared: “Yup, perfect. I have a house here and come every summer, easy living and beautiful beach.”

Someone else shared their experience of holidays in Greece then added: “Why bother with the busy and expensive islands, when you can relax and enjoy real Greek life, food and people, in the Peloponnese!!”
