Both hosts, who were boasting about their prank on social media before the nurse's death, were suspended from broadcasting. But now Christian has sued 2Day FM’s broadcaster, Southern Cross Austereo, in federal court, saying his employer had promised to support him if things ever went "too far".

The former radio host, who was made redundant in February, said he was let down by the organisation.

The Australian Associated Press saw documents which alleged that the broadcaster did not "step in" but let its two hosts take the blame, which in turn negatively impacted their careers, as per the Guardian.

The documents also alleged that Christian and Greig tried to prevent the company from crossing the line but were "left in the cold" after the suicide.

Christian's lawyers said: "SCA did not immediately take public accountability for the incident, but rather allowed Mr Christian and Ms Greig to be left exposed to relentless public vitriol, harassment and abuse, including death threats. The radio presenters were left by SCA as the convenient fall guys and scapegoats for SCA management decisions and non-compliance."

Rhys Holleran, SCA’s chief executive at the time of the incident, said that he felt "completely and utterly responsible" for it during an interview to the ABC in 2024.

Christian alleged that he started working as a presenter for 2Day FM two days before the prank call and remained there without pursuing any legal proceedings against them due to their promise to support him.

But the Firm, according to Christian, failed to provide meaningfull health support, nor did it try to rebuild his tarnished image or offer pay rises to award his loyalty, adding that he was "gradually marginalised" within the organisation.

Following his impending redundancy in February, Christian hired lawyers and claimed it was not genuine. His legal representatives said: "Mr Christian claims that the redundancy was not genuine, particularly in circumstances where SCA still requires Mr Christian’s former role to be performed."

The former radio host is now seeking penalties and compensation for economic loss and damages, while the case has yet to appear before the federal court.

Southern Cross Austereo has been contacted for comment.
