This popular tourist destination has recently been one where tourists have felt unsafe, and it’s one Brits often head to for a holiday. The city is known for its stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and exciting atmosphere, but some who have visited have said it has a dark side.
In Barcelona, rising crime rates are becoming another factor tourists should consider when planning to take a holiday in Spain. A pair of young tourists considered leaving the holiday hotspot after becoming the victim of a theft while away.
Some UK tourists who have travelled to the city say they have thought about leaving after just one hour, reports Birmingham Live.
“First hour in Barcelona and Brian got robbed already,” the pair said on TikTok.
They went on, adding: “They took my chain. We were walking down a normal street... a random man approached me, looked at me, grabbed my chain and ran off.”
“Are we leaving Barcelona?” they said, adding: “Now everyone seems suspicious.”
In reply, a TikTok user wrote back: “Welcome to Barcelona, I live there and everyday it’s getting more dangerous.”
Travel and Tour World says: “Once celebrated for its vibrant culture, coastal charm, and architectural marvels, the city is now grappling with a wave of visitor-targeted incidents, particularly in crowded tourist zones and public transit areas.”
Others have warned that tourists should be wary and check crime rates before travelling to the city.
But others have shared their stories of having items stolen while in Barcelona. An Independent travel writer has shared details of their own robbery in Spain.
“One day while shopping, I was trying on a pair of shoes. I placed my bag between my legs for safety, but as I stood up to look in the mirror, I felt a shove.
“Before I could react, a thief – disguised as a fellow shopper (to the extent that he too had been trying on shoes) – had my bag over his arm and was sprinting out of the store. I ran after him, only to see him jump onto a waiting motorbike and speed off,” they wrote.
If you’re planning to travel to Barcelona, stay vigilant for thieves who may target tourists in busy areas.
