You might think you’ve seen it all, but when it comes to exploring Europe, there are plenty of hidden gems and less well-known destinations that are worth visiting, including one that a travel influencer has described as the most underrated on the continent.
As many of Europe’s most popular cities continue to struggle with an overwhelming amount of tourists visiting during peak season, trying somewhere new is often less crowded and much cheaper. While there are plenty of alternatives to choose from, with the likes of Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina becoming increasingly popular destinations, the travel influencer Scott Visits has revealed what he thinks is Europe’s most underrated city.
In a video posted on Instagram, Scott shared that after travelling to over 50 cities in Europe, Ljubljana was his favourite, describing it as the “cleanest, safest and most unreal place”.
The capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana is becoming an increasingly popular destination for holidaymakers, with both Condé Nast Traveller and The Times listing it as one of the top destinations to travel to this year.
Nestled in between Italy, Austria and Croatia, the pretty European city is home to the emerald-green Ljubljanica River which runs through the centre, with plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby.
Cars are restricted from driving through much of the centre and the historical old town, which is accessible by one of the city’s must-see attractions, the Triple Bridge, meaning it’s a perfect destination for exploring on foot.
For adventure-seekers, much of the Julian Alps, a mountain range stretching from northeastern Italy to Slovenia, are located within the Triglav National Park which is less than an hour from the capital.
Describing Ljubljana, Scott said it’s a “true hidden gem that you must visit” and that there were “no crowds” on his trip. One follower commented on his video and said: “Slovenia is the country that surprised me the most. I had zero knowledge before I arrived and LOVED every part of it… definitely need to go and explore more.”
The Slovenian city can be reached directly by flying and while the summer months promise good weather, visiting in May and September, or even October, still guarantees mild temperatures but has slightly cheaper flights and fewer crowds.
Flights in September from London are available for as little as £34 on Skyscanner, while it will cost you £48 from Edinburgh and £69 from Manchester.
