Brothers Sean and Lewis Thompson, and Jack Carlsson, wore balaclavas and army camouflage when they carried out the kidnapping in broad daylight as children played nearby.

Brothers Shaun Thompson and Lewis Thompson, with Jamie Lawrence, Michael Townsend and Jack Carlsson, chased their victim across The Greenway, in Thorntree, Middlesbrough in a white transit van. The teen desperately cycled away as one man tried to grab him from the moving van.

Children were playing nearby on the afternoon of Saturday, June 1, last year when Michael Townsend tumbled out of the moving van during the abduction. Townsend's machete and a trainer also fell onto the green.

The gang stopped the van and captured their victim, before subjecting him to a vicious beating - repeatedly striking him over the head and shoulders with a sword - with such force that the weapon snapped. They kicked him as he lay on the ground, before hauling him into the van, along with his bike, where his hands were tied.

CCTV footage recorded the men chasing their victim, which can be viewed below, originally published by Teesside Live.

CCTV: Thorntree kidnap in broad daylight

Carlsson, 22, Shaun Thompson, 30, Lewis Thompson, 26, Townsend, 36, and Lawrence, 21, drove off with their terrified victim who was bleeding profusely from his head. However, their plan descended into chaos when the van broke down on Ormesby Bank.

The chilling episode was caught on CCTV, with the harrowing audio of someone yelling, "Get out of the f****** van" and the terrified victim's cries as he was yanked onto a buzzing road, narrowly dodged by swerving cars. Horrified motorists immediately notified the police after they spotted the boy being hauled along, bound at the hands and bereft of shoes.

The terror-stricken lad managed to escape and stopped a car in desperation.

The female driver was scared - she later told police that the victim was "bleeding a lot and panicking" and he asked her to drive him "out of the area - to Pallister Park." Instead she flagged down a passing police car, but the victim ran off and climbed up onto a garage roof.

The police talked him down and took him to hospital with a deep laceration to his head - so bad that the fatty tissue on the inside of his skull was exposed. He has not given a victim impact statement to assist the police with the prosecution of the gang.

On Monday, three of the kidnappers - Carlsson and the Thompson siblings - appeared in court to be sentenced.

Paul Rooney, prosecuting, said that the the three hid their identity with balaclavas and ski masks - after buying the equipment at the SAS shop on Skippers Lane. The Thompsons bought army style outfits and boots.

Three of gang jailed

Carlsson, of Roworth Road in Thorntree, was found guilty after trial of:

  • kidnap;
  • wounding with intent;
  • possession of a sword.

The court heard that he is in a longterm relationship and has a young child. Judge Jonathan Carroll jailed him for 10 years.

Shaun Thompson, of Premier Road in Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to:

  • kidnapping;
  • wounding with intent;
  • possession of an offensive weapon.

He was jailed for seven-years-and-six-months.

Lewis Thompson, also of Premier Road, admitted the same offences as his older brother:

  • kidnapping;
  • wounding with intent;
  • possession of an offensive weapon

He was jailed for seven-years-and-six-months.

Jamie Lawrence, of Orpington Road, in Middlesbrough, and Michael Townsend, of Eston Road, Lazenby, will be sentenced for their roles in the gang attack, on June 26.

'Complex' probe

After the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Leigh Moon, from Cleveland Police, said: "These men brazenly pulled up in a van, wearing balaclavas and armed with weapons to chase after a teenage boy who was then subjected to a terrifying ordeal.

"Having been kidnapped and bundled into the van, he was badly beaten before being thrown out of the vehicle in the middle of a busy road with passing motorists beeping.

"Due to both incidents occurring in broad daylight and in built-up areas, we received numerous reports from members of the public enabling officers to respond quickly to safeguard the boy. I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public who came forward with information that helped the investigation.

"What followed was a complex investigation to gather and preserve as much evidence as possible that would lead to the identity of the men involved and ensure they would be brought to justice."
