A shooting in a Costa del Sol pub has killed two Scottish men. Despite police sources initially describing the two victims as Irish and saying one was 41-years-old, Spain's National Police subsequently confirmed they were both Scottish. A masked man is said to have entered Monaghans Furngirola and killed them in front of horrified tourists and expats enjoying a drink after the Champions League final on Saturday, May 31, before fleeing in a getaway vehicle.

Police have set up roadblocks on the stretch of southern Spanish coast, but have not yet made any arrests. A spokesperson for the National Police in Malaga said: "Around midnight, an incident with firearms occured in Fuengirola, specifically at an entertainment venue along the seafront. Two males died from gunshot wounds. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made so far."

Grisly pictures from the scene show a man lying dead in shorts and a t-shirt against a backdrop of drinks and a menu blackboard on the terrace of the Irish bar.

One of the men was said to have died instantly after being shot in the chest, while the other passed away at the scene after attempts to save his life.

Unconfirmed speculation has suggested the incident could be gang-related, with authorities linking the murder of a 32-year-old Brit in nearby Calahonda to drug-related gang activity in April.

The region is known to be popular with international criminal gangs, who use it as a gateway for smuggling drugs from Africa and America into Europe.

Despite remaining a favourite destination for British tourists, the Costa del Sol has seen a rise in violent crime this year, with local reports suggesting the April shooting was the fourth of that month.

Just days before the incident in Calahonda, another 34-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after being shot outside a nightclub in the Costa del Sol resort.

The Malaga branch of Spain's far-right party Vox used Saturday's incident as a means of calling for an increased security presence in the tourist region.

"A new shooting in the province of Malaga, this time in Fuengirola," a spokesperson said on X. "What are the Popular Party and governing PSOE party waiting for to increase the presence of police and other state security forces on the Costa del Sol?

"We have been demanding urgent measures to end these shootings for several weeks now."
