People are raving about a "perfect" town in Wales that homes plenty of bookshops and even has one in a castle. Tourists say it's a gorgeous spot to visit for a day out, as there are bookshops at "every second shop you look", and there are a selection of themed shops too. There are also bookshops in castles, old cinemas and at various pretty spots in the town - it's fair to say reading addicts have been falling in love with it. There are also lovely places to stop for a bite to eat, and a cute sweet shop to visit too.
According to Teg, known as TegTries on TikTok, Hay-on-Wye is the "best" place to visit for a day trip and, if you're a book lover, you'll probably return home with a lot of new reads too.
Hay-on-Wye, also known simply as Hay, is a market town and community in Powys. It homes more than 20 bookshops, and is often dubbed the "town of books".
As well as holding the title of the National Book Town of Wales, it also hosts the annual Hay Festival every year. According to the 2021 census, the community had a population of 1,675 at the time.
By some, the town is deemed as one of the best places to live in Wales, and is also celebrated for its Christmas decorations during the festive season. There is so much to love about Hay.
Hundreds of people commented after Teg shared the video. Many people admitted they've visited and they think it's "lovely".
One said: "My favourite place." Another added: "The best place."
A third replied: "Oh my gosh. Went there today and it was amazing. I could spent two whole days just exploring it."
Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "I went to the winter Hay Festival alone and I felt so safe and had such an amazing time checking through the whole town and seeing the events. I can't wait to go back."
After seeing Teg's video, several admitted they also want to pay the charming town a visit. It seems they are keen to plan a trip there soon.
If you're wondering where Hay is, it lies on the south-east bank of the River Wye and is within the north-easternmost tip of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It's located just north of the Black Mountains.
The town lies on the Welsh side of the border with Herefordshire, England. Many shops in the town are known for selling second-hand books.
Some also offer books on specialist topics too. Though the number of shops has declined in recent years, the town offers a few general antique shops.
Before the Hay Festival was launched, it was already known for its books. Richard Booth opened his first shop there, which was known as The Old Fire Station, in 1962. Then, by the 1970s, Hay became known as "the town of books".
