Sarah Ferguson has issued an emotional message following the Liverpool parade crash, which injured several people. A total of 65 people were injured and more than 50, including children, were treated in different hospitals after a car mowed down a crowd during celebrations over Liverpool FC's Premier League victory.
Around 11 people remained there on Tuesday in a stable condition, while the driver, who allegedly ploughed into the crowd, remained in custody after he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and drug driving. Sarah, Duchess of York took to her official Instagram account on Tuesday to share a message of support to all those affected.
She posted a picture of Liverpool's Liver Building with a red overlay and a message which read: "My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the distressing events at yesterday's Premier League title parade in Liverpool."
She continued: "To the innocent bystanders who helped at the scene and to the emergency services who responded so quickly, a huge thank you."
The Duchess was not the only royal who sent a message of support. King Charles praised "the strength of community" in Liverpool and said that he and Queen Camilla were "deeply shocked and saddened" by the incident.
Messages of support have been sent to the people of Liverpool since the incident, including from the King who said: "I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need."
In a statement, Charles said: "My wife and I were deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the terrible events that took place in Liverpool on Monday. It is truly devastating to see that what should have been a joyous celebration for many could end in such distressing circumstances.
"At this heartbreaking time for the people of Liverpool, I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need.
"Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with all those who have been affected, and my special gratitude goes out to the first responders, emergency services personnel and other individuals who rushed to the aid of the injured."
The Prince and Princess of Wales also said they were "deeply saddened" by the scenes that marred the city's celebrations. In a personal message posted on social media, William and Kate said: "We are deeply saddened by the scenes in Liverpool yesterday.
"What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and to the first responders and emergency services on the ground. W & C."
The Princess Royal visited Royal Liverpool University Hospital on Tuesday to meet staff involved in the response. Anne met nurses, consultants and paramedics, as well as representatives from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the football club during her visit. She was told by medical staff that the city had been "very, very fortunate" not to have seen more serious injuries.
