The Jurassic Coast is full of sunny beach spots. But one seaside town often flies under the radar with holidaymakers.
Seaton, tucked away in East Devon between the better-known Sidmouth and Lyme Regis, is cherished by locals as a hidden gem. Surrounded by the busier Sidmouth and Lyme Regis, and near the picturesque fishing village of Beer, Seaton in south east Cornwall quietly holds its own with a unique charm that’s easy to overlook.
A local told DevonLive that Seaton’s lower profile has actually been a blessing. While she supports the idea of more investment, she pointed out that the town has mostly avoided the surge of second-home buyers - helping to maintain a more stable, year-round local economy.
Seaton Beach is renowned for its picturesque views and unspoiled landscapes. Stretching along the coastline, the beach boasts a mixture of shingle and sand, plus crystal-clear waters that are perfect for leisurely walks.
The beach is a family favourite, ideal for paddling and playing, with easy access and plenty of parking. It’s popular with dog walkers and shore anglers, and it's one of the few beaches in this part of Cornwall that offers decent waves for surfing.
Just behind the beach lies Seaton Valley Country Park, a haven for wildlife including dragonflies, butterflies, ducks, kingfishers, dormice, and otters. A flat main path leads visitors deep into the scenic valley. Lifeguards are on duty from May to September, ensuring a safe seaside experience.
A Tripadvisor review said: "What better place to relax than Seaton beach on a sunny afternoon. Uncrowded, clean and friendly beach and dog friendly at each end. Good to see the refurbishment of the flat blocks is well underway giving a facelift to the sea front. What better place to get some fish and chips and relax by the sea?".
They added: "If fish and chips is not your thing then pop into the well stocked and friendly Tesco and buy some delicious snacks for a fab beachside picnic. Of course there are lots of good cafés and bars nearby if you’d rather. Love this place, no antisocial behaviour puts this top of my visit list."
