Diane Morgan and celebrities push BBC to show the true scale of intensive farming

Comedian Diane Morgan has joined a group of public figures pressing the government to make the BBC portray farmed animals more honestly.

The letter, sent to media secretary Lisa Nandy, is backed by names including Brian May, Athena Turner, Kirsty Gallacher, Jenny Seagrove and Will Young.

It is also supported by 16 animal welfare organisations that have submitted a joint proposal to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Signatories say the BBC plays a major role in shaping public attitudes towards animals and should not present a partial picture.

They argue that programmes such as Countryfile and some BBC Breakfast reports tend to show pasture-based farming, even though about 85% of the roughly one billion animals raised for food in the UK live in indoor, industrial systems.

With the BBC Charter under review, the group is urging the DCMS to tighten broadcasting guidance so coverage explicitly reflects animal welfare and sentience. They want on-screen reporting to include the full range of farming practices so viewers understand the realities behind food production.

Claire Bass of Humane World for Animals UK said this review is the first since animal sentience became law, making it a key moment to require the BBC to educate audiences about the welfare challenges many farmed animals face.

She warned that while high-profile shows often focus on outdoor farming, millions of animals remain largely invisible inside intensive systems. Edie Bowles of the Animal Law Foundation added that television strongly influences how people perceive British agriculture.

Citing broadcasting standards that demand accuracy and context, she urged the BBC to continue its tradition of trusted public-interest journalism by reflecting the complexity of modern farming so viewers can form a balanced view.
