Napoli: Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku rub salt in Man Utd wounds | Football | Sport

It's been a week to forget for Manchester United and two former players have just made it worse. Goals from Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku were enough to confirm Napoli as league winners in Italy - their second Serie A title in three years.

The side, managed by former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, entered the final league match of the season knowing three points would be enough to secure the title, irrespective of what second-placed Inter Milan did against Cesc Fabregas' Como side. After a cagey first 40 minutes, McTominay opened the scoring in emphatic fashion by steering home a stunning acrobatic effort.

It was a deserved lead for the home side, who put the cherry on top of their Scudetto-winning cake with a goal from marksman Romelu Lukaku midway through the second half. An untimely reminder, at least as far as United are concerned, that the grass is greener away from Old Trafford.

McTominay, having first joined United back in 2002, left to join Napoli in the summer transfer window, joining the Serie A team as part of a deal worth £25million. It came at the same time the Red Devils agreed a £50.5m move for midfielder Manuel Ugarte. Fast forward 12 months and it's clear who has had the better campaign.

Used by Conte in a similar position to his role for Scotland, McTominay, with his 12 goals and four assists in Serie A, has been the cog in Napoli's title-winning machine. Unable to hold back the tears at full-time of the Cagliari clash on Friday night, McTominay's courage to leave his native England in search of a new challenge was rewarded in the greatest possible way. Alongside the first title of his career, McTominay was also named as the Serie A Player of the Season.

And then there's Lukaku, who has adopted somewhat of a journeyman status since leaving United in 2019, but, as he so often has done throughout his illustrious career, will be picking up another league winners' medal. His 24 goals and assists were another invaluable contribution to Napoli's league win.

It comes just days after United looked as if they could've done with a couple of players with the cutting edge of McTominay and Lukaku during Wednesday night's Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. Not only did it confirm United would go trophyless for the 2024/25 campaign, it also meant Ruben Amorim's side wouldn't be involved in European competition of any kind next season.

United, who are yet to reach the 40-point mark in the league and sit two spots above the relegation zone, have just one match of the season to play. Meanwhile, the party is only just beginning for McTominay and Lukaku in Naples.
