Gary Lineker 'in talks over TV return' next month after BBC axe | Football | Sport![]() Gary Lineker is reportedly in discussions to screen television highlights of the Club World Cup on his podcast this summer. The veteran broadcaster is set to depart the BBC after presenting this Sunday’s Match of the Day. Lineker had previously agreed to step down from Match of the Day at the end of this campaign and host the BBC’s coverage of the FA Cup next season before fronting their World Cup 2026 offering. But he will be leaving the corporation early after a social media fallout that arose when he shared a post about Zionism, which featured a rat, a symbol that has historically been used as an antisemitic insult. New episodes of Lineker’s podcast, The Rest is Football, will no longer appear on the BBC’s audio streaming service. The podcast will still be available to watch on YouTube, however. And, according to The Guardian, Lineker’s Goalhanger Productions company is talking to DAZN about the possibility of featuring match footage of this summer’s Club World Cup on the podcast. DAZN hold the global rights for the tournament, which gets underway in the USA on June 14, and have the power to hand Lineker a deal that would see him become a media disruptor, with footage of major football tournaments typically reserved for the main broadcasters. Lineker could be poached by a rival broadcaster when his BBC career comes to an end, with ITV and Sky Sports touted as potential destinations for the 64-year-old. But industry figures told the aforementioned publication that it is unlikely ITV will snap him up for their World Cup coverage as they have already invested in Mark Pougatch and a move for Lineker would put “a lot of noses out of joint.” There has also been speculation the former striker could move to Fox in the US. However, a former colleague added that “Gary likes being with one of the main players.” The Rest is Football podcast launched in August 2023, with Lineker fronting the show alongside Match of the Day colleagues Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. The trio are often joined by other former footballers, with episodes of the show regularly attracting hundreds of thousands of viewers on YouTube alone. Lineker has been splitting his time between the show and his BBC duties in recent years. But he will be free to concentrate on the podcast for the time being after explaining in a video message on Monday: “As I've said, I would never consciously repost anything antisemitic - it goes against everything I stand for. “However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action.” Source link Posted: 2025-05-23 17:13:50 |
