PGA Championship star makes grovelling apology after dangerous outburst | Golf | Sport

American golfer Wyndham Clark has apologised for hurling his driver through an advertisement board during the final round of the PGA Championship. The 31-year-old was heavily criticised on social media for the outburst, which followed a poor tee shot at the 515-yard par-four 16th.

Clark went on to make bogey before pars on the final two holes left him tied for 50th at four-over-par. Course officials were left needing to attend to the damaged sign, which ironically belonged to T-Mobile, one of his sponsors. The 2023 US Open champion has now said sorry for his behaviour.

"I would like to sincerely apologise for my behaviour on the Hole 16,” he wrote on X. “As professionals, we are expected to remain professional even when frustrated and I unfortunately let my emotions get the better of me.

“My actions were uncalled for and completely inappropriate, making it clear that I have things that I need to work on. I hold myself to a high standard, trying to always play for something bigger than myself, and yesterday I fell short of those standards. For that I am truly sorry."

The Ryder Cup player has now vowed not to behave in that manner again, adding: "I promise to better the way I handle my frustrations on the course going forward, and hope you all can forgive me in due time."

Prior to Clark's apology, the official who was tracking the player and Max Homa when Clark lost his head posted a picture of the broken sign, adding: "I’m the marshall holding the flag. Scared me to death."

Clark's form in the majors has been poor ever since his win in Los Angeles two years ago. In the seven events since, he's missed the cut three times and failed to finish inside the top-30.

His last win came in February 2024 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. However, he remains in line to again represent Team USA at the Ryder Cup in Bethpage this September.
