Limescale is not only a nuisance that can spoil the taste of your tea and coffee, but it also makes your kettle take longer to boil water, which can increase your energy bills. This pesky buildup is simply dissolved minerals from tap water that solidify into a tough residue when heated, and it’s notoriously difficult to remove, even with vigorous scrubbing.

However, cleaning enthusiast and lifestyle influencer Sammy Fisher has revealed a simple, natural solution to eradicate limescale using common kitchen staples — and there's one standout item. Sammy took to her TikTok account @sammy_lifestlemama to share her favourite non-vinegar kettle descaling trick. Although vinegar is often hailed as an excellent kettle cleaner, Sammy confessed in the comments that she “can’t stand the smell”.

Instead, she opts for an “odourless” and “miracle worker” alternative, and that’s citric acid.

She titled her video: "Limescale removal from my kettle was the quickest and most effective cleaning hack I’ve tried so far.”

At the start of the clip, Sammy exclaimed, “This limescale hack blew my mind" before showcasing the astonishing before-and-after transformations.

To replicate her method, fill your kettle halfway with water and add a tablespoon of citric acid.

Then, boil the kettle, switch it off and let the citric acid work its magic before pouring out the solution and giving the kettle a good rinse.

If necessary, give your kettle a gentle scrub with a sponge to remove any lingering limescale.

Fellow TikTok users have been singing the praises of citric acid for descaling their kettles. @user1760251632618 posted: “I found that citric acid was the best result for cleaning the kettle.”

@bakes_and_home chimed in: “I’ve used citric acid for years and it always does the job on my kettle. I'm taking some into work to do the staff room kettle tomorrow.”

@bella98 shared: “I have been using citric acid for years. Amazing.” While Sammy responded, “The citric acid was a miracle worker on the kettle.”

Later in the chat, she revealed: “My kettle was so bad and honestly it worked so well the first time.”

While some users suggested trying shop-bought descalers, Sammy wasn’t convinced, explaining: “I tried one before, but my kettle was pretty bad and it didn't even touch the sides. This was instant. I was so surprised. Nearly threw my kettle out as well.”
