Rats will run in the other direction if £3 kitchen item is sprayed in garden

UK gardeners have been told that one cheap kitchen item will ensure rats run away from their precious plants. Growers are well aware that things like sweetcorn cobs, pumpkins, squash, root vegetables, like carrots and parsnips; as well as fruit can attract the rodents. They will also go for seeds and grains if they are not properly stored. In danger as well are peas, brassicas, cabbages/kale, and turnips, with some reports suggesting that rats like eating tulip bulbs.

According to experts at Gardeners World, there is not a lot you can do to deter rats from eating your crops. However, they do add that it is thought that regularly spraying peppermint oil on or near them will help to deter them. The site states that the animals "hate the potent smell" of the substance, and will thereofore "stay away". Those with green fingers are urged to reapply the oil twice a week.

According to a search on Google, Amazon offers Peppermint Essential Oil for £3.99, as does eBay. The same site offers a different version of the product for as little as £2.99.

You can also purchase peppermint "Oil Rat Repellent" from Temu for £3.55.

On the more pricey side, Holland and Barrett sells Oil of Peppermint 200mg Capsules for £8.29. Meanwhile, Peppermint Oil Rat Repellent Spray can be bought from Ready Steady Defend for £14.99.

Repelem is selling Mouse and Rat Repellent Balls for £24.99.

Alternatively, the plant catnip can produce a strong smell that can put them off.

"Plant this in your borders and you may stop rats visiting", Gardeners World says.

Better Homes and Gardens has a fuller list of things that it says ward off the rodents, such as essential oils such like eucalyptus, citronella and lavender.

Other options include deploying whole cloves or cotton balls soaked in clove oil, dried bay leaves and cayenne or black pepper.

In addition, they are said to "detest" the smell of onions and garlic, as well as the stench of vinegar and ammonia.
