Sausages cook more evenly when this is done before cooking

Cooking sausages is pretty straight-forward - but it can actually be quite tricky to get them perfectly browned all over. However, there is one thing you should be doing before cooking your sausages to make sure you get the best results.

Sausages are an essential part of a full English breakfast but they are also a delicious part of other dishes such as a tasty sandwich at lunch time. One expert has shared their method for perfectly cooking sausages, and there is one step that you may be skipping.

And it turns out it's a pretty essential part of the process.

Before any cooking takes place, sausages should be taken out of the fridge allowed to reach room temperature, say the experts at online butcher Traymoor Ltd. This, they say, is just as important when cooking sausages as it is for cooking things like steak.

They explain: "Removing them from the fridge around 20 minutes before cooking helps them cook more evenly. In addition, there is less chance of the skins breaking."

This might come as a surprise to many who just take sausages out of the fridge and begin cooking them straight away. However, it is an essential step for cooking the very best sausages as part of your full English breakfast.

Additionally, the meat experts also advise against pricking the sausages - even though this is something many people swear by. "Although pricking them reduced the possibility of the sausages exploding, this is an unnecessary step when you cook sausages of high quality," they explain.

"Furthermore, much of the juices will seep out resulting in a dryer, less tasty sausage."

When it comes to the actual cooking, you should use a heavy base frying pan that is on a low to medium heat. If it is too hot, they say, the sausages will burn on the outside before they have a chance to properly cook on the inside.

They also say that frying is the best way to cook sausages for a number of reasons. Baking sausages in the oven may result in them not tasting as good as they can be as it "doesn’t deliver the sort of umami flavour that is typical of frying".  Plus, cooking them by deep frying results in them losing a lot of their juices and becoming dry.

After they have cooked on the pan, sausages should be let rest for a few minutes so that they are "juicier and more tender". All you have to do is resist getting stuck in right away.
