How to remove mould from washing machine seals for good without bleach or scrubbing

If you find your clothing still smells and isn’t cleaned properly after a wash, your washing machine may have developed a mould issue. However, worry not, as solving this problem is straightforward and quick to address. The rubber seal around the door of a washing machine often harbours moisture, soap scum, and bacteria, making it essential to leave the door ajar following use.

When gunk becomes evident within the rubber seal, this is a sign of the presence of mould, which could compromise the cleanliness of your clothes and the integrity of the washing machine's seal, possibly leading to leaks. Experts at Anderston James have shared a simple hack, revealing that dishwasher tablets are key to removing any mouldy build-up inside your washing machine door.

They explained: “Dishwasher tablets are designed to tackle tough grease, grime, and food residue in dishwashers, making them equally effective at cutting through detergent build-up, dirt, and mould in your washing machine.”

“These tablets contain powerful cleaning agents that dissolve grime, break down stubborn residues, and deodorise surfaces, making them a great option for maintaining your washing machine.”

Utilising dishwasher tablets to clean your washing machine may sound odd, but thanks to their potent detergents, they’re capable of dissolving mould and grease that can linger on the seal.

With ingredients in these tablets that sanitise dishes, they can also act against bacteria, preventing mould spores from returning.

To give your washing machine door a thorough clean, firstly ensure your washing machine is void of any clothing.

Simply pop one dishwasher tablet into the drum of the machine where you would usually place laundry. Opt for the highest heat and longest wash cycle your machine offers, start it up and let the washer complete the full cycle.

An expert explained: “The heat will help the dishwasher tablets break down any stubborn grime and build-up. This also helps disinfect the interior of the machine, killing any bacteria or mould.”

After the cycle is complete, take some warm water paired with a fresh cloth to wipe out the rubber seals, ensuring any residue and mould are entirely removed. Your rubber seal should now be spotless and free of any mould.

Regular maintenance, cleaning your washing machine door seal every one to three months, can keep at bay any future growth of mould or bacteria.
