Sinners ending explained as Ryan Coogler 'shuts down' sequel | Films | Entertainment

Warning - this article contains major spoilers for Sinners.

Sinners is currently lighting up the big screen and looks set to be one of 2025's most unexpected blockbusters.

The chilling historical horror unfolds in the Deep South during the 1930s, tracing the journey of twin brothers Smoke and Stack (portrayed by Michael B Jordan), who return to their hometown with plans to open a new juke joint.

Upon reuniting with their cousin, Sammie 'Preacher Boy' Moore (Miles Caton) and former flames Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) and Mary (Hailee Steinfeld), their grand opening is disrupted by a menacing group of uninvited guests.

Helmed by Ryan Coogler, the celebrated director behind Fruitvale Station, Creed and Black Panther, Sinners is already being hailed as one of the standout films of the year. But could there be a sequel?

Does Sinners have a post-credits scene?

Cinema-goers are being urged to stick around after the credits roll, as Sinners boasts not just one, but two tantalising teasers following the final scene.

By the film's conclusion, Smoke and Sammie have survived the onslaught led by the vampiric Remmick (Jack O'Connell), while Stack and Mary fall victim to his curse.

Fast forward 60 years from the events of the film, Sammie has become a renowned blues musician in Chicago, owning his own club, and receives a visit from Stack and Mary, who appear not to have aged a day.

He's presented with the opportunity to join them in eternal life but declines, before agreeing to play them a song. He then tells Stack that the day before the attack was the best day of his life, asking his cousin if he felt the same.

Stack concurs, acknowledging it as the final occasion he spoke to his sibling, basked in the sunlight, and felt a genuine sense of freedom.

Following the extended credits, viewers witness one more heartwarming scene with Caton as the younger Sammie strumming out This Little Light of Mine on his guitar.

Will Sinners have a sequel?

Despite a mid-credits scene teasing potential vampire escapades in '90s Chicago, director Coogler seems reluctant to follow Marvel's example with Sinners.

In an interview with Ebony discussing future instalments, Coogler revealed: "I never think about that."

Continuing with news that might dishearten enthusiasts who've eagerly consumed Sinners, he added: "I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that.

"I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal.

"I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention."

Nonetheless, there remains a glimmer of hope for those yearning for more; should Sinners become a smash with Warner Bros. in the upcoming weeks, Coogler may well revisit his stance.

Sinners is in cinemas now.
