Experts urge all gardeners to do this one task in May

When it comes to gardening, there are a number of jobs that need to be done to ensure your outdoor space remains at its best. With the month of May on our doorstep, there is one specific task that gardeners should set their minds on doing. According to the "expert-approved month-by-month guide" for lawn care on idealhome.com, gardeners should look to improve their lawn drainage.

The website reads: "Spring should be in full swing, and your grass should be growing week-on-week. If you're looking to improve lawn drainage, this month could be the time to tackle these problems once and for all." It is important to note that the way to improve it, depends on the type of drainage issue.

Regardless of how you do it, "proper lawn drainage is essential for a healthy and vibrant garden," says Alasdair Boyes, technical manager at lawncare brand, GreenThumb.

He adds: "Poor drainage can lead to waterlogged lawns, which suffocate grass roots and promote moss."

When  lawns are waterlogged it results in an obstructed flow of air, water, and nutrients, which is harmful to the growth of grass roots and can make them more susceptible to disease. Additionally, nutrient deficiencies, pest infestations, and the growth of mould, mildew, and rust can all come from waterlogged lawns.

Peter Chaloner, managing director of Cobra, said: "These diseases can spread quickly and cause unappealing discolouration and damage," also revealing that the top layer of soil can be washed away by very heavy rainfall.

"This will expose grass roots and cause erosion, which can result in uneven surfaces and unattractive bare patches across lawns," he continued.

The installation of a French drain is one of Ideal Home's recommended ways to "prevent any excess pooling or puddling". A French drain is a trench fille with gravel or rock, or both, sometimes with a perforated pipe. It works by redirects surface water and groundwater away from an area.

The other recommendation is levelling your lawn. Not only will it improve the health of your lawn but it will also make it look much nicer.
