Stevie Nicks teases emotional new album inspired by Prince | Music | Entertainment

Stevie Nicks has revealed she is working on her first solo album in over a decade, tentatively titled The Ghost Record.

Speaking on April 16 during her induction into the Pollstar Live Hall of Fame, the Fleetwood Mac icon said: “I’m actually making a record right now.”

“I call it the Ghost record because it just kind of happened in the last couple of weeks,” she explained. “I have seven songs and they are autobiographical, real stories where I’m not pulling any punches for probably the first time in my life.”

Unlike her earlier lyrics, which she described as more ambiguous, Nicks said this new material is direct and grounded in her own experiences.

“They’re not airy-fairy songs that you’re wondering who they’re about, but you really don’t get it. They are real stories, memories of mine, of fantastic men.”

One of the key inspirations for the album is a moment she shared with Prince in 1984 at the premiere of Purple Rain. Nicks recalled leaving the film midway through after a scene that upset her.

“I watch it, it gets to the middle, he slaps Apollonia, I freak out... And I go to the fancy bathroom and sit there for the rest of the whole movie.”

After the screening, she offered Prince a 24-karat gold necklace as a gift. “I don’t want your necklace,” he told her. “You always bring me a gift. You never bring me you.” Nicks said the comment later became a reference point for her writing on The Ghost Record.

The album began to take shape during a 92-day hotel stay prompted by the Los Angeles wildfires. Isolated and away from home, Nicks focused her energy on songwriting, ultimately creating a collection of tracks she says are some of her most personal to date.

During her Pollstar speech, she also playfully referenced former partner and music executive Jimmy Iovine, hinting that he may be featured in the album’s lyrical content: “You’re next”.

No release date has been announced, but the album marks a significant return to solo work for Nicks, who last released a studio record in 2011.
