Millions of drivers are breaking a simple car park rule and at risk of being slapped with hefty motoring fines, according to experts. Analysis from Motorpoint found that around 1.5 million motorists are at risk of parking across multiple bays in 2025.

A new survey of 2,000 UK car owners on their parking habits found that one-in-20 car owners would park across multiple bays to prevent their car from getting damaged. The research found motorists aged 25-34 were almost twice as likely to park outside of a parking bay than any other age group. However, drivers may be unaware of the consequences, as fines for parking across both lanes start from £70.

But, final charges can be closer to £130 in some areas of the country depending on the severity of the parking infringement.

Tim Rodie, driving expert at Motorpoint, stressed parking across two bays “isn’t the answer” if motorists are worried about picking up damage.

He said: “While I can empathise with motorists who are worried about their car getting damaged in a busy car park, parking across two bays isn’t the answer. 

“Not only does it leave car owners at risk of being fined, but selfish parking habits can exacerbate the issue motorists have parking their vehicles – adding to congestion and making the whole process slower.  

“If you are really worried about your car being damaged while parked in a car park, your best option is to park towards the back of a car park where it’s normally quieter and you’re less likely to have other vehicles park directly next to you.” 

As well as risking a financial penalty, parking over two spaces is likely to infuriate fellow road users.

A previous study from INRIX Research found that 49% of US drivers consider parking in two spaces to be the worst parking sin.

Graham Conway, Managing Director of Select Car Leasing, has also stressed that the seemingly harmless approach could backfire. 

He said: “More and more private and public car parks are adopting a zero-tolerance approach to parking within the white lines of designated bays.

"Even minor indiscretions, when a wheel is just a fraction over the line, are being punished with penalty charge notice (PCN) of up to £100, depending on the location.”
