How to remove stains from walls fast and naturally without damaging paint

Scuffs, marks and stains occur over time on walls, and even scribbles in a home with young kids. Cleaning your skirting boards might draw your attention to dirty walls, and then there are splatters on kitchen and bathroom walls, scuffs from furniture, and kids’ actions, which all make knowing how to clean walls essential so you can restore your home’s blemish-free look.

Members of the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page have recently debated the best methods for tackling stains on walls after one group member drew attention to the troublesome tea stain on one of their walls. Caroline Mcgarry reached out, posting: “How to get tea stains off white painted wall? This picture is after trying to clean off with baby wipes.” The image she shared showed that the baby wipe had only slightly diminished the appearance of the stain.

To address the issue without damaging the paintwork, fellow group members recommended Caroline try using a “magic eraser”.

Macy Rawlings advised from experience: “It happened to me, and I just used a magic eraser. They’re great for any stains on walls.”

Katherine Matthews offered her input: “When I have stubborn stains on my wall,s I use a magic eraser sponge. It worked miracles on my oil-stained wall that I thought was impossible to clear.”

Gail Archer suggested: “Try gently scrubbing it with a magic eraser. I use it on my wall when my daughter leaves mucky hand prints on it.”

Julie Kitts warned against using bleach due to its paint-stripping effect and reiterated the magic eraser solution: “Avoid using bleach. While it’ll get rid of the stain, it’ll also remove the paint. The stain can easily be removed with a magic eraser.”

Magic erasers, made of melamine foam, are designed to delve into surface grooves, lifting away accumulated dirt, grime and stains.

They only require water to effectively clean stains, eliminating the need for chemicals or soaps.

Melamine foam is a porous material that acts like very fine sandpaper to gently remove stains.

Despite its soft exterior, each eraser is uniquely abrasive and uses small air pockets in the material to lift stains when damp.
