Gary Neville tells Ruben Amorim the five players he must sign in Man Utd transfer spree | Football | Sport

Gary Neville has urged the higher powers at Manchester United to sign at least five players this summer. The Red Devils are expected to shake up their ranks at the end of the season, though Ruben Amorim has already attempted to temper expectations previously when discussing the calibre of targets.

United splashed the cash last summer, though their overhaul was orchestrated by Erik ten Hag rather than their current boss. As a result, a fresh wave of reinforcements at Old Trafford are expected to arrive.

Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven were brought in during the January transfer window, though other key issues in the squad were not dealt with at both ends of the pitch.

Following United’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City on Sunday, Neville felt that the performance underlined the biggest problems in Amorim’s team – with the former skipper calling for the Red Devils to bring in an entirely new attack.

Speaking on Sky Sports about Amorim’s tactical decisions against their fierce rivals, Neville said: “From a United perspective, I get why he's gone back into a low block. But that's what we've seen from Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik Ten Hag.

"They've all come in with the intention of playing high-press, high-energy football, but all end up going back to a low block in big games. I do understand why Ruben Amorim's done that today, with the players he's got, because he hasn't got the players to adapt.

"They need five new players straight away before you even think about the rest of it. The three up front are not good enough and the two wing-backs, they're not good enough.

“They need five players. They need to serve him with five players who are good enough in this system to be able to play his system the way he wants." Neville’s brutal call for a shake-up certainly may have raised eyebrows among many, especially given the call for two new wingbacks so soon after Dorgu arrived at United from Lecce in a deal worth £30million.

A marquee signing in the final third is anticipated nonetheless, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both failing to meet the mark so far this season. Victor Osimhen is among those to be linked with Amorim's side, though it is unclear whether United have the financial firepower to attract the Nigerian at this stage.
