Pep Guardiola slams Man Utd fans for 'lack of class' and says they should be 'ashamed' | Football | Sport

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has slammed Manchester United fans for the chants that they aimed at Phil Foden on Sunday afternoon. The Spaniard was left unhappy with how his playmaker was taunted throughout the match, with some chants also being aimed at the England international’s mother.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola took aim at those who were involved in the chanting and insisted that those individuals should be ‘ashamed’ of their behaviour. He said: “Lack of class. But it's not United, it's the people, you know?

“We are so exposed in the screen in world football - managers, owners, and football players especially. Honestly, I don't understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil, it's a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed..."

Foden was targeted with chants of "your mum is a fat s**g" during the goalless draw.

It was an afternoon to forget for Foden at Old Trafford, with the midfielder failing to leave his mark on the match in what was an underwhelming Manchester derby. The midfielder created just one chance in the match and missed the target with both of his shots.

As a result, the No. 47 was withdrawn after 58 minutes, with Jeremie Doku coming on in his place.

After enjoying such a remarkable 2023/24 campaign, Foden has struggled to replicate that form this season. He has scored seven goals in 25 Premier League appearances, registering two assists and losing his status as one of the first names on the team sheet at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite City failing to break the deadlock against United, Guardiola was pleased with how Foden and his teammates played despite lacking the presence and power of Erling Haaland. He explained: “We put players with a sense of goal, with Omar [Marmoush] and Phil [Foden], and after good deliveries with [Ilkay] Gundo and Kevin [De Bruyne] close to them, with the two strikers, a lot of process, the passes with Bernardo [Silva], with [Mateo] Kova, with [Ilkay] Gundo.

"Always we have lived these many years with the ball, to make a good process from behind, to make a good high pressing, we were really good with our intensity, long balls, our central defenders in Josko [Gvardiol] and Ruben [Dias] were brilliant, Nico [O'Reilly] until the last minutes when he was tired was really good as well. So in those terms, we are really, really satisfied.”
