Gardening expert’s method for growing ‘unlimited’ mint in 6 easy steps

A gardening expert has revealed how to grow ‘unlimited mint’ in six easy steps.

Joe’s Garden showed his followers on TikTok how to propagate plants so you never need to buy fresh mint leaves from the shops ever again.

All you’ll need for this is potted mint from the shops, a jar filled with water, and a pair of scissors. After the cuttings have rooted, you’ll also need a pot with soil.

Potted mint can be found at most major supermarkets for around £1.60. Garden centres will also stock them but they may be more expensive.

To start, go through your shop-bought plant and find some of the healthiest-looking sprigs, ones with lots of green leaves that look fresh.

Once you’ve found these sprigs, trim them of their bottom leaves so the plant can focus on growing roots.

Put these in your jar of water, making sure that all the sprig’s leaves are out of the water and the stem is nicely submerged. Leave them for a week or two and they should have sprouted roots.

When a sprig has three or four roots, its time to plant. Take a pot filled with soil, make a small hole and put your sprig in, taking take not to damage the fragile roots.

Each sprig needs a couple inches of room and a nice watering to get started. Put the pot in direct light and keep them inside, away from fluctuating temperatures.

The sprigs will root into the soil and become mint plants, producing ‘unlimited’ leaves for you to enjoy. Mint is perennial so will die in winter but just needs pruning to come back next spring.

This trick of propagating sprigs can be done with most herbs, meaning you can grow your own herb garden from shop-bought plants.
