Bad smells in your home will vanish with 3-ingredient hack that lasts 'for days'

If you’re looking for a way to give any of the rooms in your house a scent-boost without buying a spray or a chemical-packed product, this simple three-ingredient mixture using natural ingredients could be for you.

Add one sliced orange, one tablespoon of coffee, and one tablespoon of vanilla extract to one cup of boiling water. Place the mixture under a candle warmer and allow the scent to fill your room. Cleaning expert Chantel Mila told her 1.5 million TikTok followers that the coffee will “help eliminate stale odours” while the vanilla and orange leave a “sweet, relaxing aroma”. If the scent of an orange isn’t your favourite, you can try another of Mila’s aromatic bowls.

Mix together one cup of boiling water with a sliced lemon, two sprigs of rosemary, and one teaspoon of clove and vanilla. Again, place it under a candle warmer to keep it warm and smelling delicious.

One of the influencer’s hacks to get your bedroom smelling nice involves giving your fabric bedroom furniture - such as a bed headboard - a refresh. Soap a microfibre cloth in a mixture of soda water and dish soap and wrap it around a saucepan lid so the cloth is pulled taut - then use it to wipe the furniture down.

If you’re a fan of essential oils, you can add some onto cotton balls and place them into your vacuum cleaner which you can use to vacuum your bed and bedroom furniture for “hidden fragrance”, Mila said. She also suggests placing epsom salt and essential oil scent bags in cushions to “make your bed smell amazing”.

To keep your clothes smelling fresh, you can spray perfume or essential oils onto anti-scuff furniture pads and stick them on the inside of your drawers. However, if you have pets it is best to avoid essential oils, as they can be dangerous to furry friends.

For a fresh fridge, empty everything out and make a mixture of one cup of water, a quarter of a cup of white vinegar, and vanilla extract. Put the solution into a bottle and spray on the inside of your fridge before wiping it down with a microfibre cloth. She also recommends putting baking soda on a lemon half and using it to scrub down your sink to deodorise it.

Mila suggests sprinkling baking soda onto bath mats before washing them to deodorise musty smells. Her other bathroom hacks include using shaving foam on mirrors for a streak-free shine, rubbing candle wax onto taps to prevent water marks, and cleaning the bathtub using a mop to stop back aches.
