Remove mould from garden fences in 1 hour using 2-ingredient solution

If you've noticed green patches on your garden fence, it's likely mould or algae. Algae and mould thrive in damp areas, especially where there is lots of shade. Wood is also porous, which means it can absorb moisture, creating the perfect environment for fungus and algae to thrive. Removing mould and algae from garden fences, especially painted ones, can be difficult, with pressure washers and chemicals often being too harsh.

With this in mind, Jimmy Englezos, senior brand manager at Ronseal, has shared how to clean mould on a painted wooden fence using a two-ingredient solution. He said: “Create a solution to tackle the mould. Many solutions and mixtures can be used to remove mould depending on how severe it is and what type of wood it is, such as if it’s painted.

“For painted wood, mix a solution of washing-up liquid and water and use a sponge or soft-bristled brush to apply the solution to the area.

"Be careful not to saturate the wood as this can worsen the issue if it can’t dry properly.

"After the solution is applied, scrub the surface with the brush and be mindful that scrubbing too hard can remove the finish or paint on the wood.

"Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away the residue and avoid rinsing the area. Be careful not to let the spores contact non-mouldy surfaces if they are wet as new mould can grow.

"Allow the wood to dry and if you spot any more mould – repeat the process.”

While this method is effective, mould can sometimes be stubborn, particularly if it has been present for some time.

If this method doesn't work, Mr Englezos suggested using another two-ingredient solution, one part vinegar and water.

Decant this solution into a spray bottle and spray it onto affected areas to "kill the spores".

Leave the solution on the fence for an hour before wiping away the vinegar residue using a damp cloth, which should remove the mould. Lastly, buff the surfaces with a soft cloth.
