Canada's Reece Howden wins ski cross World Cup gold in Sweden




Canadians came away with a pair of medals in the penultimate finals of the World Cup season on Saturday in Idre Fjäll, Sweden.

Reece Howden, of Cultus Lake, B.C., won the men's big final to capture the gold medal.

Italy's Simone Deromedis and Sweden's Erik Mobaerg won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

The gold was the sixth of the season for Howden, who is the overall season points leader with 938 points. Deromedis (905) is in second place, trailing by just 33 points.

Reece Howden of Cultus Lake, B.C., wins the men's big final in Idre Fjall with a time of 1:06.44.

On the women's side, Courtney Hoffos, of Windermere, B.C., finished behind winner Daniela Maier of Germany to take the silver medal in Idre Fjäll.

Switzerland's Fanny Smith rounded out the podium in bronze-medal position and clinched the Crystal Globe for the overall season title. Smith has 976 points with just one final race remaining.

Canada's Courtney Hoffos wins World Cup ski cross silver

Courtney Hoffos of Windermere, B.C., finishes with a time of 1:12.69, behind winner Daniela Maier in Idre Fjall.

The second-placed ski racer, Canada's India Sherret, has 869 points but is also done for the season thanks to a fractured sternum she suffered while racing at the world championships in Switzerland last week.

Maier has 865 points, but could not catch Smith as the maximum amount of points earned in one race is 100 points.
