Tomatoes will grow healthily by adding kitchen staple to soil - not vinegar

Tomatoes will grow stronger and healthier when one common household item is added to the soil. According to gardening experts, adding milk to the soil will greatly help your tomatoes to grow healthily. Many Brits grow tomatoes every year, with most already having sown the seeds so that their tomatoes are ripe and ready for the summer months. If you want to grow the juciest, most healthy tomatoes then this might be the trick you want to try.

Using milk as fertiliser for plants is not a new thing but it is uncommon amongst gardeners. However, it is cheap and effective, many say. When planning to use it for your soil, you have to mix it with water, making sure that your mixture is one part water and one part milk. Various types of cow's milk can be used, including milk that is past its use-by date and evaporated milk. Simply add it to a spray bottle and mist it over the leaves of the plant.

Meanwhile, you should also let the milk soak into the soil. If you repeat this every few months, then you should give the tomatoes the full benefit of this trick.

You can pour the milk/water solution around the base of the plant and let the roots soak it up. But why exactly is milk a good fertiliser for plants?

Milk can give plants the proteins and calcium that they need as well as other nutrients they need to grow strong and healthily. While it improves the health of both the plant and the soil, it can also reduce the risk of your tomato plant developing powedery mildrew, a common frustration for many gardeners.

Blossom end rot is caused by a calcium deficiency in plants, so using milk as a great fertiliser for preventing this. Like us, plants need calcium to grow.

It is also a great way to make sure your plant is getting plenty of moisture. There are a number of clever tricks for gardeners when it comes to growing tomato plants.

For keeping pests away from your tomato plant, growing it beside marigolds is a great option. If you want to improve the taste of the tomatoes that you are growing, then you can place them beside basil, an old trick that many gardeners swear by.
