England star leaves Thomas Tuchel's squad just 36 hours before Latvia clash | Football | Sport

Anthony Gordon has left the England camp just 36 hours before Monday's World Cup qualifier against Latvia. The Newcastle United winger suffered a hip injury in the win over Albania on Friday and he will head back to the north-east to continue his recovery.

New Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel selected Marcus Rashford on the left wing in his first match, with Gordon only given a 16-minute cameo off the bench. The Magpies wide man will naturally have hoped to make his case for the long-term starting berth against Latvia on Monday, but his hopes of impressing Tuchel are now in tatters.

Gordon had to be helped off the pitch by FA medics after slumping to the turf on the final whistle. "He looks injured," said Tuchel after the game. "I thought it was his stomach but it's his hip, and he doesn't look good."

The 24-year-old limped out of the stadium and has been assessed this weekend. But England's medical staff ruled him out of the Latvia game and sent him back to St. James' Park.

An England statement read: "Anthony Gordon has withdrawn from Three Lions camp having sustained an injury during Friday night's 2-0 win over Albania. The forward has returned to Newcastle United for further assessment. Speedy recovery Anthony."

The forced withdrawal will be a crushing blow for Gordon, who has scored once in 10 England appearances since making his debut last year. The former Everton star was tipped to feature prominently at Euro 2024 but he was only a bit-part player under Gareth Southgate on the Three Lions' run to the final.

Gordon's injury won't be well received by Eddie Howe, either. The Newcastle boss is already without Lewis Hall, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, and he was preparing to welcome Gordon back into the fold after a period of suspension.

Tuchel has plenty of other options to fill in on England's left wing. Rashford will once again be available, but if the German wants to try something different, he also has the likes of Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers and Phil Foden to call on.

After the Albania game, Tuchel made it clear that he wanted more from his wide players. "We hope for more impact in these positions," he said. "More dribbling and more aggressive runs towards the box. In general that was missing. The chances come from the little runs behind the line. They were not as decisive as they can be."
