Add this kitchen item to fireplace to keep ashes from flying about

With spring cleaning in full swing, many homeowners are turning their attention to their fireplaces. As the weather warms, cleaning out leftover ash and soot becomes a priority. However, tackling the mess without sending fine particles into the air can be a challenge. Fireplace maintenance experts now suggest a simple yet effective solution.

Instead of struggling with clouds of airborne ash while sweeping, homeowners can sprinkle damp coffee grounds over the cooled ashes. The moisture in the grounds helps to weigh down the fine particles, preventing them from becoming airborne and making cleanup significantly easier.

In addition to reducing mess, the coffee grounds leave behind a subtle roasted aroma, offering a fresher scent to the fireplace area.

Fireplace maintenance professionals warn against common cleaning hacks that could do more harm than good. Some people attempt to vacuum up ashes using a regular household vacuum, which can be hazardous if hidden embers are still smouldering.

Others believe in burning potato peels or aluminium cans to clean the interior of their fireplace, but experts caution that these methods can lead to stubborn residue or even release toxic fumes.

A safer and more effective approach to fireplace cleaning includes using natural solutions such as white vinegar mixed with water to clean fireplace glass, along with a microfiber cloth and mild soap for wiping down surfaces.

Bioethanol fireplaces are also gaining popularity as a low-maintenance alternative, eliminating the need for ash and soot cleanup altogether.

Mike Rawles, Customer Services Director of Imaginfires, said: “Switching from traditional fireplaces to bioethanol models offers a cleaner, more modern aesthetic and significantly reduces the effort required for maintenance. Bioethanol fireplaces are virtually soot-free, meaning no more tedious ash and soot cleaning after each use.

"To maintain your bio fire’s elegance, we recommend simple cleaning practices: Use a mild cleaning solution and a non-scratch scourer to keep surfaces spotless, and polish stainless steel components gently to preserve their shine. A soft, humid cloth works perfectly for wiping down the exterior panels.

"Regular maintenance ensures your bioethanol fireplace remains in top condition, prevents spills, and guarantees safe operation. With these easy steps, you’ll enjoy the beauty and warmth of your fireplace with minimal effort."
