How to remove limescale from toilets for good without bleach

Limescale is a common nuisance in many homes, affecting everything from kettles and washing machines to shower screens and toilets, especially in hard water areas. It stubbornly clings to the pristine white of toilet bowls, leading over time to unsightly discolouration of the porcelain. To combat and prevent limescale in toilets, Jen Needham, otherwise known as the Cleaning Fairy Godmother, has divulged her top tips.

While many cleaning enthusiasts swear by a mix of white vinegar and baking soda for this chore, Jen suggests that the most effective method for removing limescale is using a pumice stone. She advised: “Remove the water from the bottom of the toilet by pushing it out with a toilet brush.

“Then, gently go over the marks with a pumice stone, and it will get through them perfectly.”

The unique porous nature of pumice stones makes them particularly adept at tackling toilet limescale.

After eradicating the limescale, the cleaning expert recommends a specific product for daily use to keep it at bay - Harpic Power Plus Black.

She explained: “A great product to use daily once you’ve tackled the limescale is black Harpic toilet gel so it never comes back. Using it daily will help to control the build-up.”

Harpic's website boasts that their toilet cleaner is “10 times better than bleach” at removing limescale and works “fast”.

Cleaning enthusiasts are raving about this toilet cleaner, with one professional praising its effectiveness on Mrs Hinch's Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook group.

Kelly Thompson posted: “Had a job with this unused toilet. It had been out of action for years, and the limescale buildup was terrible.

“I squirted the Harpic and left it for half an hour to get rid of the stubborn limescale.

“I’m so happy with the product. I now use it myself to prevent limescale from coming back.”
