Cheltenham Festival fury as pub introduces strict rule | UK | News

A pub in Cheltenham has slammed the  racing festival and laid down a strict rule for punters this week. Planet Caravan Cheltenham, located on Bath Street, just off the busy Bath Road in the town centre, took to social media to explain the realities of being a local during the festival week.

In a post on Instagram, the craft beer pub claimed that the atmosphere around the Cheltenham Festival has changed over the years. Rather than being a Mecca for horse racing lovers, it's quickly become a party for people who dress as Peaky Blinders, they said. The post claimed that, during the much-loved festival, the town centre becomes "unpleasant" after the racing finishes at 5pm with people urinating and vomiting in the streets. The pub is instead offering people a place to avoid the racing crowds under one condition - no tw**ts are allowed.

The Instagram post has amassed over 50 comments so far, with a number of locals agreeing with the pub's take that Cheltenham takes a turn for the worst during the festival. One person even said they've fled to France to avoid the event this year.

Planet Caravan Cheltenham said in a post on Instagram: "Just our annual post to say that if you’re planning on drinking from 8am + then stumbling into town to behave like a child who’s had their first panda pop then kindly keep stumbling.

"Race Week used to be a great week for the town, I grew up here + it was so exciting, the atmosphere in town was electric. Especially as an underage girl going out. I used to pop on my best 'going out' top from Tammy Girl + my school trousers (currently rocking those again) + obviously no coat because we thought they’ll know we’re underage if we wear our coats.

"There was actual horse enthusiasts, people who love horse racing, respected the town + came because it was THE BEST event in the racing calendar. Now though?! What the f*** has happened. Town is awash with people who think dressing like a peaky blinder is the most important part of going to Cheltenham Festival.

"Yes we chose to own a bar in town but we do also live in the centre + it’s quite frankly an unpleasant environment post 5pm. Piss in the street. More vomit than I’ve ever seen (I’ve seen a lot). And a general sense of uneasiness.

"So. If you’re wanting to avoid the Race Week crowd you are more than welcome here but we accept that this week will likely be one of our quietest weeks of the year as all our regulars avoid the centre of town.

"Everyone is always welcome at ours + as you know we are definitely up for a rowdy raucous night full of debauchery as long as you kindly remember we operate a strictly #NoT****Allowed policy…"

Cheltenham locals took to the comment section to share their dislike for the festival week. Lgarner32 said: "Well said. I love this town, I hate this week. We will survive."

Shondoug added: "Preach! I ran away to France this week to avoid it and I'm honestly so happy with my choice. Stay strong!"

Rich818100 agreed: "Yeah, Cheltenham, unfortunately, is just one giant public toilet during race week." Vicjarratt put: "Absolutely spot on."

Jgfinchy wrote: "Here here, couldn't say it better, each year this week gets worse and it used to be enjoyable for our town." Cheltenhamyoga commented: "Totally agree. We live on the Evesham Rd and it’s horrible. We’ve already had people pissing in the garden this morning on the way to the races."
