Alan Titchmarsh says 'not enough' as he reveals how much to mow lawn

Gardeners' World legend Alan Titchmarsh has shared his latest gardening advice, telling fellow horticulturists how frequently they should be mowing their lawns. Taking listeners' questions on the Gardeners' World podcast, the green fingered expert shared the importance of keeping on top of lawn mowing duties, especially when the warmer months come round: "The thing about a lawn, if you mow it regularly, and by regularly I mean in spring and summer, at least once a week."

Adding that "once a fortnight is not enough" during the "height of the season" we can even mow our lawns as frequently as twice a week, but he admitted that he "seldom" does that personally. He even shared how he mows his patch during the winter months, if it is continuing to grow, but did admit that this hinges on the weather conditions.

Meanwhile, sharing his techniques for getting the best results on his patch, he added: "I don't absolutely shave it, I suppose there's probably about three quarters of an inch of grass on my lawn that I leave."

And, the gardening expert also gave listeners an insight into how he opts for one mower over another, as it helps provide his favoured pattern: "I use a rotary mower but with a heavy rear roller as oppposed to four wheels, because the heavy rear roller gives me the stripes that I like. So, it's a rotary instead of a cylinder that is generally used on fine lawns."

In what has been a hugely successful career, Alan is probably best known for his role imparting his horticultural wisdom on Gardeners' World from 1996 until 2002 when he was replaced by Monty Don, who has presented the show ever since. Highly regarded as one of the most respected faces in the world of gardening, he was made an MBE in 2000, before being made a CBE this year for his services to horticulture and to charity.

Since his time on Gardeners' World came to an end over 20 years ago, his career in broadcasting has continued to go from strength to strength with his current venture, Love Your Weekend With Alan Titchmarsh, sees him welcome a whole host of celebrity guests each week.
