BT offers surprisingly cheap broadband but Virgin has something better

If your broadband bills are making you wince, it might be worth shopping around for a new deal. Some of the UK's most famous suppliers have cut prices in surprise spring deals with things now starting from under £26 per month. BT is one Internet Service Provider (ISP) that has reduced rates with its standard 74Mbps package currently costing just £25.99. The company also has faster 150Mbps downloads for £29.99 and ultimate 900Mbps access for just £36.99 which is one of the cheapest prices we've seen.

All of those deals are based on a 24-month contract with £0 upfront fee to pay. They are definitely enticing discounts but before you sign on the dotted line it's also worth checking out what Virgin Media has to offer.

Virgin also has some low prices on its broadband and it not only beats BT on cost but also on download speeds. For example, there's decent 132Mbps downloads for just £23.99 per month or the chance to get 362Mbps access for just £29.99 per month.

Virgin's best plan is priced at £36.99 - which is the same as BT - but those who sign up will get 1130Mbps downloads which is faster than what BT has to offer.

Virgin's deals are based on an 18-month contract.

Along with Virgin and BT cutting prices, Sky also has some decent deals with prices starting from £25 per month for 75Mbps speeds or £39 per month for 300Mbps access.

Just one word of caution about all of these offers. Before joining, make sure you check what speeds you really need. Although 500Mbps sounds exciting, it's often far too fast for most. As a guide, a home with two people who simply send a few emails and watch Netflix in HD quality should be fine with 50Mbps access.

Anyone with a gadget-packed property full of people downloading PS5 games, watching 4K streams and working from home might want to consider 300Mbps or more. Don't forget, your broadband is just like the M25, the more traffic that runs through it the slower it can get.
