How to remove grease from extractor fans fast and naturally

The purpose of extractor fan filters is to collect grease, so if it’s doing its job correctly, it’s going to look and feel greasy and need a deep clean. Over time, the filter may become so blocked with grease and grime that it loses its effectiveness, which is why it’s important to clean these filters every so often.

A good rule of thumb is to clean your range hood filters every two to three months. If you use your hob regularly and fry foods often, you might want to up that to a monthly cleaning task. To make light work of this chore, a cleaning expert behind the Instagram page @thecleangroup has shared her “no scrubbing” method that works on the “greasiest of cooker filters”.

While many cleaning enthusiasts recommend using a dishwasher tablet to tackle the job, the cleaning expert has shared a cheaper method that works in 10 minutes to use instead.

In the caption of the video they said: “So many cleaning hacks recommend using dishwasher tablets. But do you know how expensive those things are? Even an own brand pack works out at 45p per tablet. I’ll be saving those for the dishwasher, thank you”.

Instead, the cleaner shares their method, which is to pair baking soda and vinegar with salt.

They explained: “This hack will cost you the grand total of 8p and, most importantly, it works on even the greasiest of cooker filters. And the best thing - no scrubbing required!”

For this method, start by filling your sink with boiling water before adding in half a cup of baking soda.

Then add in half a cup of table salt. The cleaner said that this ingredient is what “absolutely cuts through grease”.

Salt absorbs grease, making it easier to lift away dirt, and when combined with baking soda, it enhances the cleaning power.

Make sure to fully submerge your “really greasy” cooker filters into the solution and leave to sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

After, spray white vinegar on the wet filter and “watch that grease disappear before your eyes”.
